Personal Items Needed for Young Victims of Exploitation

Many of the young people served by the Safe Harbour program have few, if any, personal belongings. Whether living on the street or showing up at an emergency shelter, these youth often need basics such as toothpaste, deodorant or socks. Anything you can donate would help. Thank you!

I Am Little Red

Geared toward middle school aged children, this 10-minute video re-imagines the classic fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" by identifying tactics used by wolves (traffickers) to lure Little Red off her/his path. A Safe Harbour staff member is available to lead a discussion or lesson plan following the video. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the Safe Harbour program.

The Albany County Safe Harbour Program seeks to raise public awareness and offer support to youth who may be victims of or at risk for commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

Funded by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the goal of the program is to identify at risk and trafficked youth and to respond by identifying a variety of supportive services including food, clothing, shelter, case management, transportation assistance, public assistance linkages and vocational and recreational therapy.

In addition, the Safe Harbour Program has joined with community partners and stakeholders to develop an Outreach Program to identify, educate and support the needs of at risk youth in our community.

The Safe Harbour For Exploited Children Act (2008) defines a sexually exploited child as any person less than 18 years of age who has been subject to sexual exploitation as a result of their loitering for the purposes of prostitution or their engagement in an offer to exchange sexual conduct in return for food, clothing a place to stay, drugs, or a fee.

This law was created to protect sexually exploited children from being charged with a juvenile delinquent offense in appropriate cases.

Human Trafficking is the practice of exploiting individuals, including children, as commodities in conditions of sexual and labor servitude.

Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) is one type of child sexual abuse. It is defined as the sexual exploitation of a child (under the age of 18) in return for cash or in kind goods or services provided to the child or a third person or persons. Examples include sex trafficking, child pornography, stripping/dancing, cyber-enticement, intra-familial sexual exploitation and survival sex.
