DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Incumbent has charge of inmates at the correctional facility. These duties involve the responsibility for security of inmates and enforcement of rules and regulations of the correctional facility. Work assignments vary from positions in which there is limited inmate contact, to direct contact with inmates in and outside the correctional facility. Work is performed under supervision and personal inspection of a superior officer. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Supervises inmates confined to correctional facility in the various areas in and outside the correctional facility, such as wings, corridors, control center, gates or doors and rooftops posts;
- Takes periodic count of inmates in tiers or on work details;
- Maintains watch for and reports any unusual conditions or disturbances to a superior officer;
- Responds to alarms and emergency calls for assistance;
- Inspects tiers and cells and enforces regulations covering sanitation, personal care and possession of contraband;
- Supervises inmates during meal time, work details, social and recreational activities;
- Makes provisions for inmates medical attention;
- May assist in distributing medication to medical rooms;
- Inspects all traffic in and out of the correctional facility;
- Operates switchboard on assigned shift;
- Receives and logs prisoners arriving at the correctional facility;
- Keeps records on prisoners whereabouts in and outside the correctional facility;
- Prepares inmates and makes sure papers are ready for court appearance.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: These duties involve a variety of law enforcement responsibilities, which includes criminal, civil process, and court services. Ordinarily, the incumbent works under the supervision of a higher ranking officer, but under an emergency situation may exercise independent judgment. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Patrols an assigned area on foot, patrol car, snowmobile, boat;
- Serves legal papers issued by the court, such as summons, subpoenas, writs of garnishment, attachment and execution;
- Investigates suspicious activities and makes arrests for violations of Federal, State laws and local ordinances;
- Escorts prisoners to jail and to court or stand guard when a prisoner is admitted to the hospital;
- Directs traffic and maintains order at public gatherings;
- Checks doors and windows of businesses, residential property, summer camps;
- Watches for and makes investigations of missing persons and stolen property;
- Transports blood from blood bank in Albany to other hospitals in need;
- Instructs children in snowmobile and boat safety rules;
- Patrols and observes the boarding and departing of passengers at the Airport;
- Maintains security, order and decorum in the court room;
- Transports prisoners to and from jail, court and institutions;
- Transports jurors;
- Acts as a firearm instructor or first-aid instructor;
- May repair or replace worn firearms as needed;
- Keeps records and makes reports.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Eligibility for an appropriate New York State Driver's License. Possession of license at time of appointment. Incumbent must maintain license to maintain employment. Candidate must be eligible to carry a firearm at time of appointment and throughout employment. Candidates must meet all requirements set forth in New York State Civil Service Law § 58.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing emergency medical services. This person also operates and utilizes specially equipped vehicles. When providing emergency medical services, the person in this position is in radio contact with, and may receive direction from paramedics and/or supervising physicians. Work is performed under the direction of the Paramedic Supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Operates specially equipped vehicles to respond to emergencies and provides care to stabilize persons with life threatening problems resulting from trauma or other medical emergencies;
- Participates in the providing of emergency medical treatment to accident or other victims such as extrication, splinting, immobilization, airway management, CPR, Homeostasis,Drug administration (with existing protocols), defibrillation, etc.;
- Monitors and transmits assessment and vital signs information via radio or telephone;
- Applies rescue techniques and knowledge to affect the safety of persons trapped in vehicles, stranded, marooned or endangered by unusual circumstances;
- Keeps records of emergency calls, patient treatment, and problems encountered and solutions rendered, in the course of duty;
- Maintains equipment on specially equipped emergency medical vehicles in appropriate operating condition;
- Participates in emergency medical training of other police, volunteer fire and EMS personnel, and other members of the community;

MININUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a current certification as an EMT-Basic, issued by the NYS Department of Health, in accordance with Part 800, Chapter IV of the Emergency Medical Service Code; AND,
- Possession of a current certification in CPR; AND,
- Possession of a driver’s license issued by NYS Department of Motor Vehicles and continued possession of said license required to maintain employment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:These duties involve responsibility for providing emergency medical services. Employees in this position operate specially equipped medical emergency vehicles. When engaged in providing medical emergency services, incumbents are in two-way radio contact with, and receive direction from, monitoring hospital physicians who provide advice during a time of medical need. The work is performed under the supervision of the EMS Coordinator who makes assignments and reviews work in process and upon completion. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Operates specially equipped vehicle to respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced life support services to stabilize personswith life threatening problems resulting from trauma or other medical emergencies;
- Provides medical emergency service to accident or other emergency victims such as extrication, applying splints and immobilization, administration of oxygen, suctioning, insertionof airways, homeostasis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency childbirth, electrocardiogram monitoring, injections, anti-shock suit, defibrillation, etc.;
- Monitors and transmits vital signs of pulse, blood pressure and respiration and transmits biomedical information via telemetry such as electrocardiogram;
- Performs direct medical actions on persons requiring advanced emergency services at monitoring physician's direction such as defibrillation;
- Administers oral, intra-muscular and intra-venous medications as directed by monitoring physician via two-way radio with the emergency vehicle;
- Applies rescue techniques and knowledge to effect the safety of persons trapped in vehicles, stranded, marooned or endangered by unusual circumstances;
- Assists in development and implementation or an operational plan for major catastrophes and material or man-made disasters in order to respond to medical emergencies;
- Keeps records of emergency calls, patient treatment and problems encountered and solutions rendered in the course of duty;
- Maintains equipment on specially equipped medical emergency vehicles in appropriate operating condition;
- Participates in emergency medical training of other police, ambulance personnel and members of the community and coordinates emergency medical services on site.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
OPEN-COMPETITIVE: EITHER:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; AND,
- Possession of a current certification as a Paramedic issued by the New York State Department of Health in accordance with Part 800, Chapter IV of the State Emergency Medical Service Code at the time of application; AND,
- A grant of medical control privilege from one of the following agencies: REMO, AAREMS or Mountain Lakes Regional EMS Council; AND,
- Possession of a driver’s license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of application and continued possession of said license required to maintain employment.
PROMOTIONAL:Twelve (12) months of permanent competitive class status as an Emergency Medical Technician. Must be a licensed Paramedic and have a grant of medical control privilege from one of the following agencies: REMO, AAREMS or Mountain Lakes Regional EMS Council.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:Eligible candidates should be trained in Medicated Facilitated Intubation (MFI) through a regionally approved MFI course, or be willing to become trained, without compensation, in MFI before completing their probationary period.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Receives incoming emergency calls for police, fire and emergency medical services and dispatches appropriate equipment and personnel in response to calls. These duties involve the responsibility for receiving all emergency calls made to the various services and for dispatching the personnel and equipment in accordance with the location and nature of the situation. The work is performed in accordance with standards and rules under the general supervision of higher level personnel. Sound judgment and the ability to perform duties calmly and efficiently in stressful and emergency situations are required of an employee in this class. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Receives police, fire and emergency medical service calls;
- Obtains, records and disseminates information;
- Dispatches police, fire and other emergency medical personnel and equipment by means of multi-frequency radio systems;
- Records radio and telephone calls and maintains active records on response of personnel and equipment;
- Operates two-way radio equipment and related communications equipment;
- Maintains radio contact with department employees, as well as, other agencies;
- Establishes and maintains appropriate records as required relating to all aspects of the communication operation;
- Performs related clerical work.
